FREE ELLIOTT SMITH MP3S FROM ROMAN CANDLE & FROM A BASEMENT ON THE HILL (03/02/10)
Today we are making available two Elliott Smith songs: “Last Call” from Roman Candle and “Twilight” from From A Basement On The Hill. Both albums will be reissued on April 6, 2010.

Roman Candle is Elliott Smith’s first solo album and was originally released on Portland’s Cavity Search Records in 1994.

Roman Candle had quite an impact on Slim Moon, Kill Rock Stars' founder: "In 1994, I had been asked to be on this five-person solo-act tour called Pop Chord with Tammy Watson, Carrie Akre, Sean Croghan and Elliott Smith. The first night at the Crocodile in Seattle, I didn't pay too much attention and people talked all thru Elliott's set. Sean Croghan got up next and said "all of you people who just talked through Elliott's set are bummed because you just missed something very very special." The next night of the tour, at The Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco, I listened very closely to Elliott's set, and it was basically one of those life-changing moments. Instead of watching the rest of the performers, I went out to the tour van and popped Roman Candle into the player, and listened to it on endless repeat for the rest of the evening and beyond. It completely blew my mind. I have never heard music as heartwrenchingly, gut-checkingly honest, intimate, and wise before or since."

Roman Candle has been remastered for the re-release by Roger Seibel and Larry Crane, editor of Tape Op Magazine and archivist for Elliott's family. Kill Rock Stars will also be releasing Roman Candle on vinyl for the first time in the U.S.

From a Basement on the Hill was released posthumously in 2004 on ANTI- records.

With the addition of these two records Kill Rock Stars is now the home for all of Elliott Smith’s independent releases: Roman Candle, Elliott Smith, Either/Or, From a Basement on the Hill, and New Moon.

DEERHOOF'S APPLE O' AND GREEN COSMOS VINYL FOR RECORD STORE DAY! (03/01/10)
FROM GREG SAUNIER
I distinctly remember my first trip to an independent record shop. To my surprise, my arrival at the register (holding the Keith Richards solo album Talk Is Cheap) came with some un-asked-for commentary courtesy of the people working there: "I just saw him on Saturday Night Live, and boy did he look pale..." I felt simultaneously frowned-upon and ultra-impressed that someone could just walk in and buy anything in the place, and they'd have something to say about it.

Years later after Deerhoof was formed, independent record stores became central to our livelihood. Our first releases were 7" singles and an LP, and the only shops that carried them were independents. In some cases, it was finding our record in such a store that initiated relationships that would become important for us later. For example the owner of the label Menlo Park Recordings found Deerhoof this way, and went on to release a double 7" and two CDs (Halfbird and Green Cosmos). Also Thurston Moore discovered Deerhoof in this way and contacted us about opening for his band Sonic Youth, which we have now done several times.

We're going to celebrate Record Store Day this year with two LP reissues: APPLE O' and GREEN COSMOS.

In our era of Music Overload one never knows if one's songwriting efforts will be recognized in any way, let alone heard, let alone remembered...so it was with a genuine thrill that we discovered our 2003 album Apple O' lurking in some end-of-decade lists. Let it be enjoyed afresh! Record Store Day 2010 is approaching, and here comes Apple O' on vinyl for the first time in years. This time the vinyl is blue and the artwork expanded. 4 previously unreleased bonus tracks enhance the free download that is the automatic fringe benefit of a purchase of this LP, because you will get a download code. Most likely on a small piece of paper, careful don't lose it.

Please enjoy Green Cosmos, it is coming on Record Store Day April 17 2010. I expect many have never heard it before, due in part to a substandard marketing campaign when it was originally released in 2005. It is not on any end-of-decade lists. It is the first time on vinyl of any color, let alone milky green and with free downloads and 4 bonus tracks. Careful - don't lose the small scrap of paper that contains the download code, until the download is successful, then discard, or recycle where municipal regulation allows. I have heard the 12" 45rpm test pressing and trust me this the definition of hi-fi, you can hear every last squiggle and clink, it is a thing of beauty.

Apple O' was about the Greek god of music and order, Apollo. Green Cosmos was about the Cosmos, i.e. space travel, galaxies, the big bang, and all the things in the universe.Apple O' was about the apple from the Tree of Knowledge, the ability to harness the atom, and its effect on Japan-US relations 1945 to the present.

Jazzy - Enjoy.

- Greg

SEE XIU XIU ON TOUR AND DONATE TO A GREAT CAUSE! (02/25/10)
When Xiu Xiu return from the UK, they’ll head out on their US tour. On the road, the band will be fundraising for At The Crossroads, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that helps street youth through counseling, outreach, and other services.

The band is asking for donations of any amount, and certain amounts of donation will come with specific prizes.

$1 (show only): Everyone who donates a dollar or more at the show will get together at the end of the show for a big group picture. The band will then post these pictures online.

$5: The band will mail you a postcard, probably made by Xiu Xiu, sent while on the road.

$10: Xiu Xiu will email one of a kind picture of the band on the road + description of what's going on before and after, not during.

$30: The band will mail you any random thing bought at a gas station, thrift store, or anywhere! from the road

$50: The band will mail you a special David Horvitz collection of Xiu Xiu photos.

If a collective total of $5000 of donations is reached, Xiu Xiu will release a never before released song, a collaboration with Mary Pearson (High Places), for free to download.

Please note: Everything but the group pictures will be offered online and at the show.

At the end of fundraising, the band will read out the names of everyone who donated on camera and will put the video online.

LOTS OF LOVE FOR XIU XIU'S DEAR GOD, I HATE MYSELF (02/25/10)
"Xiu Xiu have hit a milestone with Dear God, I Hate Myself...a defining achievement from an accomplished, veteran group."
Tiny Mix Tapes

"Baiting the haters seems like a full-time job for Jamie Stewart...Haters may be puzzled by this overt, well-chilled accessibility—but everyone else can just dig in and enjoy."
The Onion / AVClub.com

"If Stewart's emotional self-flagellation keeps producing songs this good, maybe we shouldn't tell him that this is his catchiest work since Fabulous Muscles."
-Scott A. Gray, Exclaim!

"outrageous brillance"
SPIN, 4 out of 5

"Xiu Xiu main man Jamie Stewart is the world's oddest and best pop star-in-waiting"
NME, February 20, 2010

"Dear God, I Hate Myself is another in a long line of quality albums Stewart's crafted under the Xiu Xiu moniker. May he never slow down."
-Stephen Carlick, Exclaim!

“This Too Shall Pass Away (for Freddy)” is honest and powerful and haunting -- and the best moment on the record."
PREFIXMAG.COM

“No need to hate yourself Jamie, you've just made the decade's first avant-garde/light entertainment crossover record, and perhaps given yourself the recognition you've truly long deserved.”
NME, February 13, 2010

“it’s time Xiu Xiu clambered above cult acclaim”
ROCK SOUND, 9 out of 10

“this goth pop is brilliantly poignant”
LOUD & QUIET (UK; about Dear God, I Hate Myself)

"Those still lamenting the demise of the Smiths can always take comfort in Xiu Xiu: Jamie Stewart’s inimitably sordid avant-pop project continues to churn out so-morbid-they’re-funny tunes at a healthy clip."
Time Out New York

"Jamie Stewart's over-the-top, heart-on-sleeve lyrics seem to trump everything else about his ongoing Xiu Xiu project, but on top of writing some amazing songs, his revolving cast of bandmates are some of the best in indie rock."

HAPPY RECORD RELEASE DAY XIU XIU AND QUASI! (02/23/10)
Today marks the release of our first two records of 2010!

XIU XIU Dear God, I Hate Myself LP/CD
Each new Xiu Xiu release has evolved alongside the lives of Jamie Stewart and company. On this record you'll find more intensity and introspection than ever before, but sonically and lyrically it continues to move forward with a subtly new perspective — hyper-focused yet aware of a larger, external picture unfolding. The pace of the record grips you, the music offers layers of detail, and the themes focus on not just the past or stark present but hint towards vespers of the future as well. Dear God, I Hate Myself will challenge you and force you to look inside yourself, but only after you get lost in the music. It's passionate, it's energetic, and it affects you.

Dear God, I Hate Myself is a beautiful piece of humanist art. It's an important addition to the growing body of intelligent music from Xiu Xiu. And it's a brilliant gothic pop record that can stand next to anything.

QUASI American Gong LP/CD
Quasi's new album, American Gong, is still ringing in my ears. And by ringing, I mean that it's obliterated and unstuffed the cushiony music that's been singing me to sleep for the past few years. Personally, I’m well rested and ready to move on. American Gong signals that the musical group hug we've been stuck in for a while is over. Gong lurches and veers; it reels, resets, crawls and moans. But the album also professes beauty; it surfaces from the murkiness and soars. In the midst of this awesome sonic storm are expertly crafted compositions and arrangements, gravel and grime-coated rock, psych and pop tunes that never lose their shine.
