This remains true with Dear God, I Hate Myself as it delivers a look at responsibility, fear, healing, and societal roles wrapped in rich gothic pop music. The sound is still distinctly Xiu Xiu, but Jamie Stewart's vocals are finally effortless paired with vibrant melodies full of subtlety and the distinct sonic accents expected of this anticipated Xiu Xiu release. The result is a record that proves that art can be pop and pop can challenge you to look inside yourself.

Each new Xiu Xiu release has evolved alongside the lives of Jamie Stewart and company. On this record you'll find more intensity and introspection than ever before, but sonically and lyrically it continues to move forward with a subtly new perspective — hyper-focused yet aware of a larger, external picture unfolding. The pace of the record grips you, the music offers layers of detail, and the themes focus on not just the past or stark present but hint towards vespers of the future as well. Dear God, I Hate Myself will challenge you and force you to look inside yourself, but only after you get lost in the music. A: a trio-full of sinuous music which reclaims the minimalist sound of the post-punk that they first created themselves. In September 2018, after decades of friendship, three women decided to finally combine forces for a show of strength. The equation seems straightforward, yet it's very powerful: Klaudia Schifferle (Kleenex/Liliput) + Madlaina Peer (Noknows) + Sara Schaer (TNT , Souldawn) = ONETWOTHREE. Three women bassists/singers from classic Swiss post-punk bands dot their insistent, minimal music with drum patters, synths, chants, commands and joyous wordplay with their sometimes cynical, sometimes sensual take on leisure and consumer culture. The group is appropriately DIY, self-contained and self-produced - their debut was written and played almost entirely by themselves.

There was all the time in the world to make art, and it was there, in the cabin, that Bitch began to write some of the songs that would appear on Bitchcraft. “It gave me space to think about the biggest version of myself that I could be,” she says of those early days in the cabin. In 2019, a group of wise-beyond-their-years SD teens, singer/guitarist Tuesday Denekas, drummer Milla Merlini and bassist Sasha A'Hearn, rose like punk-pop phoenix's from the ashes of their previous band to coral guitarist/singer Charlee Berlin (who owned but didn't know how to play her instrument at first) to resurrect Denekas' songs of heartbreak and determination, starting out as the Fluorescents with 2020's noteworthy 'self-titled' EP. Proudly christening themselves The Inflorescence, the band found the right home with Kill Rock Stars to unleash their debut LP Remember What I Look Like. The group faces challenges like juggling high school and college classes, finding all-age venues in town and rejecting gender labels as they explain: “in a largely male-dominated industry, we see how undermined we are for being a no-man band, and we see how being on stage empowers alternative girls and nonbinary people.”

The stunning debut LP Remember What I Look Like was conceived during quarantine and draws on the band's inspirations, including indie, punk, emo, grunge and alternative. Tuesday Denekas's songs of shattered, disappointed romance sound triumphant in these infectious songs that are propelled by Milla Merlini's thunderous drums, Sasha A'Hearn's steady, anchoring bass and Charlee Berlin's stinging guitar leads. The confident nine-song album has zero dull spots or wasted songs. Starting with the sinuous, fast-paced “Phantom Feelings” and the resilient, stomping “So Much of Nothing” to the start/stop drama of “Are You Sorry” and the deceptively sweet, bouncy “Last Week” and the hair-pin turns and resilient defiance of “The Truth” to the brief respite from the title track which launches into the epic, gripping “Tomorrow Night” and the desperate grunge power of “The Button,” finishing off with the roaring climax of “Board Game,” it’s a rollercoaster ride of thrills and anguish to strap in for.

1. Phantom Feelings
2. So Much Of Nothing
3. Are You Sorry
4. Last Week
5. The Truth

6. Remember What I Look Like
7. Tomorrow Night
8. The Button
9. Board Game

Cat. A childhood Beatles fascination grows well next to the sounds of the golden state, weaving vivid guitar into operatic commentary veiled in a true California partly-cloudy forecast. In their newest album, Ramon, Nichols queers a canonical musical figure, using theatrical lyrics to paint vignettes of white rabbit adventures and very real social pressures all within a DIY ethos. “You learn early on that no one is going to do it for you, or that what you are wanting to see or hear doesn’t exist, so you need to do it yourself with your friends.”

Each track is a three to four minute romp inside a specific emotion, playing out theatrical puzzle pieces that build on each others’ sounds. There’s so much to be said about the perfectly fuzzed strings and how they fit seamlessly into powerfully catchy lyrics, versatile and relevant percussion, etc. There’s also so much to say about how fun it is to just listen to it happen. Their work touches on sounds that might feel homey to those of us who have been listening to the likes of Kill Rock Stars’ Elliott Smith, bounces distinctly off of the 1960’s technicolor daisy of the British Invasion and matures into Nichols’ specific artistry.
