Sarah Mary Chadwick's Take Me To a Bar / What Am I, Gatsby? is out today on CD and limited-edition "violet" vinyl. Alongside the physical release of her ninth studio album, Chadwick shares “Not Cool Like NY / Not Cool Like LA (Geoffrey O’Connor Remix).”
Geoffrey O’Connor transforms Chadwick’s piano-clad confessional into a lush, dream-pop reverie. Dreamy synths and a funky, propulsive bassline lend the track a sophisticated cool. Amidst its swirling textures, Chadwick’s lyrics drift lucidly through the haze, making the emotional weight all the more intoxicating.
The accompanying visualizer presents a voyeuristic, double-binocular split view, capturing vintage coastal life. One pair of lenses shows sun-drenched, late-'80s/early-'90s beachside leisure; the other captures the East’s version of the same—then later, its restless rhythm, with NYC’s skyline, yellow cabs, and crowded streets.
The viewer watches from a lower perch—perhaps Taumarunui—no longer in heaven, no lineage of fame, as Chadwick’s lyrics suggest. Just the soft ache of ordinary life, made more special through its honesty and vulnerability. A portrait of glossy "cool," painted by an artist who’s earned their own—quietly, over time. |
