The Decemberists pink vinyl + cover by Fruit Bats
Fruit Bats is a folk group spearheaded by Eric D. Johnson. You might know him from his prior work with The Shins and his current work with Bonny Light Horseman, the group he started alongside Anaïs Mitchell and multi-instrumentalist Josh Kaufman.
Fruit Bats started in Chicago in the late 90s. They've released records on our partner label, Jealous Butcher Records, and now join Kill Rock Stars' 30th anniversary series with their cover of "As I Rise", originally performed by The Decemberists on their 2003 record Her Majesty the Decemberists.
Eric D. Johnson says, "The Decemberists honored me with a cover of one of my songs a few years back, so when I was asked to choose a KRS band to cover, the choice was clear. I’ve always loved this song - it’s always felt to me like some sort of string band hymn reinterpreted into a Exile-era Stones track. My idea was to re-reinterpret it back into some kind of hyper traditional form. This song feels forever to me."
